Overactive bladder... the myths and the evidence #1

Updated: Oct 20, 2023

Over the next few weeks I will share some information on this topic, as there are perhaps a couple of myths and facts that need to be clarified by evidence.

The first question to answer would probably be to define what overactive bladder (OAB) is?

In the past overactive bladder (OAB) has been poorly understood and labelled as “idiopathic”.

According to Peyronnet et al. (2019) OAB must rather be seen as a multifactorial symptom syndrome, which is complex, and results from multiple pathophysiological mechanisms. The approach to diagnosis should therefore be to seek these underlying pathophysiological phenotypes by means of a comprehensive clinical examination (Peyronnet et al. 2019).
